Dispute Resolution
When a dispute arises, it is important to know your options. We help you assess them and choose the most suitable route, and we represent you in negotiations, in court or in arbitration, in Latvia and internationally.
How we can help
- Negotiation and settlement: many disputes can be resolved without going to court. We help you assess claims, prepare responses and negotiate with the aim of reaching an agreement that works for you.
- Litigation: if an agreement cannot be reached, we represent you in court at every instance and prepare the procedural documents required, from the statement of claim through to appeal and cassation.
- Arbitration: arbitration is a private court that the parties agree on in their contract. We represent clients in international arbitration, including at the Arbitration Institute of the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce (SCC) and the ICC, as well as in Latvian arbitration courts.
- Cross-border disputes: in disputes involving several countries, we assess which country's law applies and which court has jurisdiction, and work with foreign colleagues where needed. We also assist with the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments in Latvia.
Our approach
In each matter we involve the colleagues whose expertise is most useful in the situation. As the work progresses we take your objectives, timelines and budget into account, and we discuss the next steps together. Where needed, we also take part in negotiations and in putting decisions into practice.
In a dispute it is important to understand early on which route is the most suitable. That is why, before proceedings begin, we assess the prospects and how best to handle the matter. The disputes practice is led by partner Agris Repšs, who worked for many years in the dispute resolution practice of one of the largest law firms in the Baltics.
Who we help
We help companies in disputes with business partners, suppliers and buyers, as well as in disputes arising after transactions. Our clients work across many sectors, from construction and forestry to manufacturing and aviation. We also help shareholders and private individuals, mainly in commercial disputes and cross-border matters.
Our experience in this area
2026Dispute over seller liability following the sale of a forest portfolio
Forestry and natural resources
Following the sale of a forest portfolio worth several million, the buyer brought substantial financial claims against our client as seller on the basis of the seller's liability stipulated in the sale and purchase agreement. The dispute was heard in court.
We developed and implemented the client's defence strategy, focusing on the scope of the seller's liability stipulated in the sale and purchase agreement and the merits of the claims brought. We represented the client in the proceedings and prepared arguments for dismissal of the claim.
The court of first instance dismissed 85% of the claim brought against the client, substantially reducing the client's potential financial liability.
2025Commercial disputes in aviation supply chains
Manufacturing and trade
Several companies in the aviation sector, including parts manufacturers and suppliers, faced commercial disputes concerning unpaid amounts for delivered goods. The disputes involved international supply chains and the performance of contractual obligations between commercial partners.
For each matter, we developed an appropriate dispute-resolution strategy, represented clients in negotiations and litigation, and provided support with debt recovery. In our work, we took account of the specific features of the aviation sector, as well as the fact that disputes frequently involved several jurisdictions and different supply-chain participants.
Successful dispute resolutions were achieved for the client, protecting its commercial interests and promoting performance of contractual obligations.
2024International construction dispute in SCC arbitration
Real estate and construction
During the implementation of a significant real estate project, a dispute arose between the employer and the main contractor regarding performance of the construction contract. The disagreement concerned design documentation, including technical solutions, as well as payment for completed construction works. Due to deficiencies in the documentation and delayed payments, the main contractor suspended the works and terminated the contract. The dispute was heard by the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce Arbitration Institute (SCC).
We represented the client in the arbitration proceedings and advised on the allocation of liability for design errors, the allocation of contractual risks, suspension of construction works and termination of the contract, as well as unpaid amounts, contractual penalties, default interest and the enforcement of guarantees.
2023International goods supply dispute in SCC arbitration
Manufacturing and trade
An international trading company supplied goods worth more than USD 1 million to a foreign commercial partner. Following delivery, a payment dispute arose and was heard by the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce Arbitration Institute (SCC).
We represented the client in the arbitration proceedings, substantiating its right to receive payment and to suspend further deliveries due to a fundamental breach of contract. We also assessed issues relating to interest, contractual penalties and joint and several liability. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) applied to the dispute.
A favourable outcome was achieved for the client.
